Welcome to Challenge 15 -- a wide open contest for all about Cats

  • Posting the URL to your (one) entered article for the competition (CLOSED)
  • (Posting comments about other authors' submitted articles) New comments go on the challenge thread
  • For Voting, when the contest is closed to new entries and we all vote for our favorites (COMPLETED)

Deadline for entries was:  Thursday 10-22, Midnite, GMT

The official thread for our All About Cats Challenge #15

Please be sure to voice your opinion in the Cat Poll, center column, below. Your vote counts!

Look to the right of the Comments section for two wonderful Cats videos!

New information for Voting

DEADLINE for entry submissions was Thursday, Oct 22 2009 Midnight GMT (7 pm New England time)

We had 16 entrants in total, all posted below. Articles are displayed in reverse order. Our two most recent entries are posted at the top of the left column below.

VOTING is now complete. Instructions for voting are posted below.

Please be sure to read all the articles BEFORE you decide on your contest votes.

Once you've read all the submissions, please decide your FIRST and SECOND place votes. Place your votes here on the Challenge Zone, by adding a new Comment.

Vote by Member Name, to avoid any confusion, like this:

"I vote for Geo Washington first place, and for Thom Jefferson second place"

Please add SHORT comments for each vote, like this:

"Geo's article was well written and funny, too!

Thom's article was also excellent, though not as engrossing"

Note that you are not allowed to vote for your own article.

If you'd like to add additional comments about your votes, or about any or all of the entered articles, please add a fresh reply to the Challenge Thread. You can repeat your votes there, if you like, but please be sure to post them here on the zone so we all can find them.

Questions? Ask them by replying to the Challenge Thread. Please don't start additional Group threads, as this gets confusing.

Thanks to all of our talented author entrants! These were fantastic, start to finish. It's been wonderful having so many new contestants, too.

Let's talk about your cat! Join the fun right here.

Do you love cats?

Do you despise them? Would your dog be mad if you brought home a tabby?

Do you find cats to be mysterious and aloof, or entirely lovable and the perfect companion?

How many cats live in your house -- 1? None? 100?

One way or another, most of us have an opinion, an emotional response, some good advice, or a great story about a cat, or cats in general.

That's what Challenge 15 is all about. We're looking for one new, original article or essay from you that has something to do with cats.

THE WORD "CAT" SHOULD APPEAR IN THE TITLE

We'll accept poems, short stories, testimonials, cat-care tips, cat breed reviews -- whatever venue suits you will be fine. Choose wisely, of course, because your submission will compete head to head with everyone else's.We can create new titles if you need them. Check the site first, though. One member mentioned finding about six pages of cat titles available.

TO ENTER, you'll post the link and a blurb about your submission on the Challenge 15 Zone (right here), in the Comments section. You can post yourj entries on the challenge thread, too, but it's important to gather a list of contestants right on the zone. That's where our votes will be entered, too.

What's in it for you?

  • Fame: a possible front page feature (not guaranteed)
  • Fortune: huge cash prizes will be yours (ask Glory Lennon, our previous winner)
  • Notoriety: a chance to socialize with like-minded writers here at Helium

Will your entered articles score big pennies, like our How To pieces did? I doubt it, but you never know until you post them. There are a LOT of cat-oriented websites, however, so you might just find yourself a few dollars richer from a Stock Content sale down the road.

We need five contest entrants to make things official. Ten would be great. Anything over ten boosts the final cash prize by $1 per contestant. So bring your friends. Once we have a good contest crew we'll close off new submissions and open up the challenge for your votes.

Submit your cat photos for display on the Challenge Thread. Add links there for any cat-related zones, blogs, or favorite websites, too -- we love to share and promote.

Questions? Post those right here, too.

PLEASE NOTE: We've changed the page format

We now have so many entries, and so many great cat pictures, that I've had to change the page layout to display all of your contest stories. Please see the center column, just about the Comments section, for the earliest entries.

Keep 'em coming, and I'll find room for them -- you guys are fantastic!  ~Jim

NEW NOTE: Everyone's entry is now listed in a Link List, directly to the right of the Comments section at the bottom of this page. Makes things a bit easier.

Please check Monday morning's front page for possible articles displayed (fingers crossed). Our next challenge will be "Giving Thanks" as we discussed. To be eligible, the entrie's title must include the word "thank" or a form of that word. All styles of articles will be acceptable. New thread will show up first, then the new zone after that. See you there!

Official Rules & Reg's

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO'VE NEVER PLAYED BEFORE:

Here are the official rules of On-Board Author Challenges,

as developed during the previous 14 competitions, and modified once again for Challenge 15

  • These contests ARE NOT sponsored by, endorsed by, nor are they guaranteed by Helium or any of its legal representatives
  • Rules of each competition are subject to change without prior notice, as deemed fit by your host, Jim Bessey. Any rule changes will be clearly posted on the challenge zone and on the forum thread
  • Contests are open to all Helium members. Member must have an open and active account at the time the contest is concluded, in order to win
  • Entry is made by recording a Comment on the matching Challenge Zone. Entries posted to the group forum thread become offiical once they are added to the Zone.
  • One entry per contestant.
  • All articles written and submitted to the challenge must be NEWLY created, specifically for the challenge. The official starting date for each challenge will be clearly marked in the matching thread and also in the corresponding Zone.
  • Entries are made by publishing this new article to an Active Helium title. Any TOS or User Agreement violations contained within an entered article may be grounds for disqualification.
  • Conditions for inclusion in a challenge may include the requirement to read and comment upon other authors' articles, and to post a vote for first and second-place articles after the deadline for new submissions is posted and past.
  • Winner will be determined by adding scores earned for first and second place votes:
  1. 5 points for each First Place vote
  2. 3 points for each Second Place vote
  3. Additional points earned for other qualifying actions (if applicable)
  • Entrants can earn ONE POINT for Inviting another Helium writer to the current challenge. The Invited writer must publicly post this fact on the correct zone or group, and then submit an eligible article. One point is earned for EACH writer invited, so more than one Invite Bonus point can be earned by an individual.
  • Deadlines for submissions, for voting, and for finalizing the contest will be posted on the challenge zone and in the challenge group thread
  • Decisions of the contest host are final. In the event of a math error, any participating member may request a recount of votes and points before the contest is finalized.
  • Cash prizes, if included, will be awarded via PayPal only. Since Helium members must have an open PayPal account in order to receive payments, this method should be acceptable to all users. No other payment method will be employed. This is NOT an official Helium payment, and WILL NOT be shown on the member's Earnings page.
  • Display of the winner's article on Helium's front page is at the discretion of staff and editors. No reason need be supplied, in the event that an article is deemed unacceptable for Front Page display. However, every reasonable attempt will be made to include the winner's article on the home page for one day.
  • These rules, and any changes to them, will be displayed in the second Post Reply (Challenge Thread) and on the matching Challenge Zone.
  • Additional information regarding this contest may be displayed in other areas of the thread or zone, and may also be supplied at a later time. Failure to modify these rules to include such additional information does not negate the inclusion of those conditions as part of the Challenge guidelines and rules.

Intermission entertainment!

This is beyond adorable, slightly educational, family friendly, and totally fun to watch. No cats were harmed during the filming of this video. They were, however, mildly annoyed (as noted by the vido's producers). Enjoy!
